As mentioned in #K2FiqhNotes1, Hadith & Fiqh works service & support each other and it is impossible to suffice with one over the other. So, how do you combine studying these books together? Sh. Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh حفظه الله mentioned 6 steps (with some additional commentary by myself):

Step 1: Get a full picture of the issue. Any issue that you come across in the books of Fiqh or Hadith, organize it until you understand it fully (which also includes understanding the intended meaning of the author’s terminology).

If you come across that issue in a Hadith book, return to the books of Fiqh to obtain a full picture of that issue (as mentioned in the previous post).

Step 2: Then go on to learn the ruling حكم of that issue. For example, in the books of Fiqh it will say X is permissible, or there is a condition شرط that must be fulfilled for Y.

Understand those conditions شروط & their details because they are considered as rulings as well.

Step 3: Based on the intent of the author of the book you’re studying, learn what evidence دليل is used for that issue:

A. If the evidence is from the Quran, then return to the books that discuss Ahkaam of Quran; this will differ based on each respective madhhab.

Works on Ahkaam al-Quraan by:

al-Qurtuby is based on Maaliki Fiqh

al-Harraas is based on Shaafi’ee Fiqh

al-Jassaas is based on Hanafi Fiqh

Abdur-Razzaaq ar-Ras’any is based on Hanbali Fiqh

*Beware that none of them are free from fanaticism towards their respective madhhab*

B. If the evidence is from the Sunnah, this is where you return back to the books of Hadith to find out details of those ahadith’s authenticity level, the intended meaning(s) of its wording, & compare/contrast their explanations with the Fuqaha’s deductions.

C. Then study the other evidences mention (whether they be agreed upon or differed over).

Step 4: Use the tools learned in Usul al-Fiqh to figure out how that ruling was derived from the evidence.

Step 5: Learn if there is any difference of opinion in the ruling of that issue. What are the other statements? For those other statements, follow steps 1-4 as mentioned above.

Step 6: Come to a conclusion as to which statement is most correct.

_______

As you can see, many of these steps are not applicable for beginners. The point of this post was to show how one combines between Hadith & Fiqh books.

It takes time to reach this level of study, and hopefully this post encourages the reader to work towards this goal. How do you reach this point? In shaa Allah in the next post we will share the ideal way of studying & progressing in Fiqh.
